Windshield wipers are charged to renters ("this person let the car get too dirty and then ran the wipers, which damaged them"). Literally charged the guest's credit card for a $125 replacement tire because the previous tire went flat before the new renter even got off the premises, and they were gloating about it. I saw stories where a guest was charged for a full tire replacement because there was a nail in the tire that wasn't caught at drive-off time but happened when exiting the parking garage (Turo guests are responsible for whatever happens to tires after the rental begins).

The margin on these extra fees is much larger for hosts and so many of them see these fees as a must-charge way of improving their bottom line because apparently just taking in the rental fees is not enough to make the venture profitable for many hosts.

In short, these hosts are generally fee-happy and actually want to charge you more-this is because Turo takes over half of the money from the base rental rate that you are charged, as part of their service fee plus insurance. God forbid you are a minute late with your return, which is probably in some obscure off-airport parking lot that is difficult to get to, because they'll look to charge you an improper return fee. Pickups are generally a hassle because most owners remotely unlock their vehicles and require you to take a selfie with your license and the car in just such a way, and if you do it wrong you have to stand there waiting while they give you further instructions. If you go over an in many cases unreasonably limited number of miles during your rental (in some cases 100-150 miles for short rentals), they'll look to ding you 50+ cents per mile over your allotment, even on a car that has 80,000+ miles on it where the obvious cost per mile when you are covering gas is much less. If the car is not completely spick and span, they'll look to charge a $25-50 cleaning fee (and I mean spick and span most hosts expect you to pull over and vacuum the car and leave it in near-detailed state). What I've discovered is that Turo hosts (the owners of the cars that are rented out) are, in many if not most cases, looking for any and every reason to charge you more than the quoted rate. I researched Turo and belong to several Turo entrepreneur groups as I was interested in perhaps renting cars as a side hustle.
